The Need
Many people throughout the world see the subject of slavery being a story of history. This, sadly, isn't fully the case. Slavery is a very real issue today, and even the most powerful nations such as the United States and various nations throughout Europe are not exempt from it. If you would like to show a gift of thanks to any of Big Knee Productions' sites or creations of their author, please consider doing so in the form of a donation to help put and end to slavery.
The Cause
With the 2007 release of Amazing Grace, which details William Wilburforce's push to abolish slavery, and his later success of making it illegal for British subjects to participate in slave trade in France, which in time lead to the abolition of slavery in Europe.
The release of the movie also brought out a movement known as The Amazing Change, which is a push to help end modern slavery throughout the world.
The Statistics
Recently, as part of my fellowship's look into the issue of slavery, I was asked to compile some information regarding modern day slavery. Below are some of the stats that I found.
- 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders yearly, nearly half of whom are children.
- 2 million women and children are held in sexual servitude, 80% of whom are between the ages of 24 years old to 6 years old.
- 27 million men, women & children are formally enslaved worldwide.
- 127 million children are employed in some of the worst forms of child labor today.
